1. Certificate in Systemic Family Therapy

Course Regulations

The programme is designed to:

  • equip learners with the theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding of systemic family therapy. 
  • develop learners' clinical skills, competencies, attitudes and knowledge in the application of systemic family therapy in various contexts.
  • train learners in scholarly enquiry and effective dissemination of systemic family therapy knowledge.
  • promote the production of context based literature through clinical documentation.
  • skill and re-skill the learners in counselling principles.
  • explore and adpt systemic counselling concepts to counselling practice.
  • assist the learners to critically appraise the diverse contexts for systemic counselling practice.
  • The candidate must possess a Diploma qualification in a helping profession e.g. social work, nursing, teaching, etc from a recognised institution.

2     Entry Requirements

To be eligible for admission on the Certificate in Systemic Family Therapy Programme a candidate must:

  • have passed at least five "O" Level subjects including English Language at grade C or better.
  • have recognised professional qualification in any human service profession such as teaching, nursing, social work, pastoral work, police etc.
  • have minimum of two years post qualification experience.
  • be working in settings where he/she works directly or indirectly with young children, adolescents and their families to enable him/her to apply systemic ideas to his/her on-going work.

To be admitted straight onto Systemic Family Therapy Level 11 a candidate must:

  • have complited Systemic Family Therapy level 1 or its equivalent.
  • have passed an entrance examination compromising a two-hour theory paper on systemic theory and a clinical assement (in form of a role-play) where he/she must demonstrate appropriate family therapy skills.
  • Candidates who seek admission on both Systemic Therapy Level (1 & 2) should be twenty-five (25) years old or above.

Programme Structure

  • Candidates who wish exit at level 1 (Certificate in Systemic Family Therapy) are required to have a minimum of 30 credit points including those from a practicum and research project.
  • Candidates who wish to exit at level 11 (Diploma in Systemic Family Therapy) are required to have a minimum of 60 credit points including those accumulated at level or its equivalent.

Mode of Delivery
The teaching - learning systems will include printed materials as the main medium of instruction, supported by audio and video materals, and other relevant distance learning media, whenever available.

ASSESSMENT SCHEME

  • Each course except project and practicum will be examined by coursework assignments and examinations.
  • The weighting of assessment for each course will normally be:
  • Coursework practical assignments            10%
  • Coursework theoretical assignments         10%
  • Practical examinations                            10%
  • Theory examinations                               10%
  • Research project                                   10%

NOTOFICATION AND AWARD OF DEGREE

  • Results of each candidate shall be published in accordance with the provisions in the General Academic Regulations.
  • The award of Diplima in family Therapy shall be done in accordance with the provisions in the General Academic Regulations.

DIPLOMA IN FAMILY THERAPY

SYLLABI

In accordance with the provisions in the General Regulations, detailed syllabi for courses do not form part of the General or Faculty regulations, but shall be submitted through the department concerned to the appropriate Faculty board for approval.  Copies of the detailed syllabi shall be maintained in the Faculty office for reference.

4. Short Courses
CONNECT also offers short training courses on a demand basis. The courses are tailored to specific requests for a wide range of organisations, companies and groups. Courses can be tailored around the following areas:

The courses above are also offered at regional level in Zimbabwe as well as outside Zimbabwe.

4. Supervision and Training Track
Aims:To develop and train potential trainers and supervisors in systemic counselling
Admission requirements:
Trainees who have completed the Diploma in Family Therapy and 20 hours of peer supervision are eligible to register as trainee supervisors with CONNECT.

Course Outline:
The course involves an academic programme of six terms over two years, attendance at weekly observation groups and monthly supervision meetings. A total of 34 hours clinical work is required for this course which includes “live” supervision, tape reviews and clinical consults.

Application and selection for this course:
Application must process the Diploma in Family Therapy. Selection is based on letter of application, a curriculum vitae and referees reports. Interviews will be held where necessary.
