COUNSELLING

|     LIBRARY AND DOCUMENTATION    |    CONSULTANCY    |

CORE ACTIVITIES
CONNECT’s main activities are divided into three main areas: counselling, training and consultancy.

COUNSELLING
Qualified professionals offer counselling to individuals and families using the systemic approach at our counselling centre at 95 Central Avenue, Harare, between 08:00hrs and 16:00hrs Monday to Friday. A community based project is run at Hatcliffe Extension, and Epworth Clinic targeting low income groups of clients.

What problems can we help with?
We counsel individuals and families with a wide range of social, emotional and behavioural problems including those involving adolescent and child problems, HIV and AIDS, bereavement, alcohol and substance abuse, depression, eating disorders and marital problems.

Who can contact CONNECT?
Anyone can contact CONNECT direct by letter, telephone, e-mail or calling in. Doctors, schools social workers, psychologists or other agencies can also refer clients.

Referrals
Referrals are taken from hospitals, doctors, other government and non-governmental organisations as well as families themselves. If a professional refers a family or individual to CONNECT this must be done with her consent. The family must then contact CONNECT direct to make their first appointment.

The resident therapist is available for discussion on referrals if required. CONNECT will keep in touch with the referring agency where appropriate.

Who should come?
All family members are asked to attend counselling sessions if possible because every person can play an important role in the resolution of a problem. If other family members are not able to come individuals will still be seen.

What about confidentiality?
CONNECT offers a confidential service to clients and is sensitive to the need to maintain confidentiality at all times.

What does it cost?
Payment for counselling can be made by cash, medical aid or a donation basis, which reflects what a family can afford. Nobody is turned away if they cannot afford it. CONNECT offers a number of sessions as community service to families who cannot afford anything.

What language is used?
Counselling is available in Shona, English and Ndebele.

How long does it take?
The counsellors and the family will decide the number of sessions needed. Each session lasts approximately an hour.
